Krampus run in South Tyrol

Video: Krampus run in South Tyrol

The Krampus, a gruesome figure from pre-Christian times, has since become a naturalized companion of St. Nicholas. In the weeks before and around Christmas, they are up to spread mischief in the villages of South Tyrol and their costumes can be admired at Krampus runs. It’s not just the scary masks and fur costumes that are worth watching, but also the show that is put on at the end of each run. Originally, figures such as the Krampus were there to drive out winter and scare away evil spirits, but they also take on the role of Farmhand Ruprecht, who punishes bad children, while good children are rewarded by St. Nicholas
