There are seven Schildhof farms spread in the municipal territory of San Martino in Passiria extending at the foot of the Gruppo di Tessa mountains
The municipality of San Martino in Passiria has got some 3,100 inhabitants and is located in the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park, in central position in the Val Passiria. Part of the municipality are the villages of Saltusio, Sorgente, San Martino, Valclava, Vallone, Montaccio and Cresta. In the village and surroundings, there are seven of the ancient “Schildhof” farms, ancient farmsteads that typify the Val Passiria valley. We particularly recommend you to visit these farms along the recently established Schildhof trail (Passeirer Schildhöfeweg).
San Martino in Passiria is an ideal place if you would like to spend hiking holidays, from here you can reach the Alta Via Meranese high path. Another popular excursion destination is the Pfandler Alm pasture, which is a significant place from a historic viewpoint, as the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer has hidden right here in the weeks before he was captured. What makes you move in your holidays is also the Golfclub Passiria - Merano as well as the climbing gym of San Martino. Those who love arts, however, appreciate San Martino above all as former seat of the so-called “Passeirer Malschule“, the arts school of Val Passiria. Many artworks of this school still adorn the façades of some buildings in the municipality.
If you are looking for a souvenir we either recommend you the tasty cheese “Passeirer Biokas“ that is produced right here, or the South Tyrolean Alpine apple flourishing in the southern part of the village. And if you spend your holidays in September in the village, don’t miss the village fair “Mortiner Dorffest“.
