San Leonardo is the main village of the municipality San Leonardo in Passiria and is located at 693 m a.s.l. in an idyllic position along the road to Passo Giovo. Here, at the edge of the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park, the Passirio and the Valtina river join. Also the famous Sandhof farm, the birthplace of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer, is located in San Leonardo. Today this farm hosts the MuseumPasseier, which is dedicated to the Tyrolean hero, exhibiting also a typical clustered farm in the open air area.
Castel Giovo is another worthwhile excursion destination in San Leonardo. Located above the village, once upon a time it represented a mighty castle. Its donjon is today open to the public and a branch of the MuseumPasseier. It can be reached in a 20-minutes' walk from the centre of the village via the trails Gerichtsweg or Sonnenrundgang. The parish church of San Leonardo is located away from the centre, of the former church only the lower part of the steeple has been preserved.
A popular excursion destination for families, however, is the "Norggensteig" trail. The Norggen are little creatures dressed in green, with a cap on their head. A highlight for children! The walk starts at the Sandhof farm and takes approx. 2 hours. An outdoor pool, a climbing wall and a tennis hall complete the sportive offer for your holidays in San Leonardo.
