Vernurio

Vernurio is a base for hikers along the Alta Via Meranese high path

The little village of Vernurio is located at 1,090 m a.s.l. above Rifiano on the sunny slopes of the Gruppo di Tessa. Despite of the fact that Vernurio has only got some 30 inhabitants, it is divided into Vernurio di Sorpra and Vernurio di Sotto. Its church boasts a beautiful steeple, is dedicated to S. Giovanni di Nepomuk and was constructed in 1840.

The farms in the village form an ensemble, worth seeing is above all the sawmill at the Brunnerhof farm, which has been restored basing on the original building. In fact, this Venetian water-powered sawmill was used in common by the farmers of Vernurio for centuries. However, the village is above all known with hikers walking on the Alta Via Meranese high path, as it offers a few accommodations for overnight stays such as the Gasthof Brunner.

Since the late 1970s, Vernurio has been connected to the Val Passiria by a road, which rose the quality of lives of the inhabitants and prevented their emigration. What is particularly comfortable is the “hiking bus service“ connecting the villages of Vernurio, Rifiano, Caines and Tirolo. Those who love hiking are thus well-connected with the villages in the valley and can start their walk on the Alta Via Meranese hiking path or the Gruppo di Tessa.
