Caines has got almost 400 inhabitants and is one of the smallest municipalities of South Tyrol, located at the entrance of the Val Passiria at 592 m a.s.l. Like the neighbouring village of Rifiano, also Caines nestles in between orchards and vineyards. Characterised by its mild climate, Caines is surrounded by a rather alpine scenery with the Gruppo di Tessa and the homonymous nature park, making the village an ideal starting point for hikes.
Whether you walk on the Alta Via Meranese high path, make a tour in the Sopranes valley or a promenade along the Pyramid trail, Caines makes you move. Also recommendable is the Roggia di Caines, stretching along the 600 year old irrigation canal. It is an easy trail and can be walked by anyone.
Also worth visiting is the parish church of Caines, renovated in the 12th century in Romanesque style, while the nave has been extended in the 19th century. The choir as well as the pointed arch portal originate in the 15th century, all in all a great complete artwork. Last but not least you should visit the tractor museum, where 30 tractor models are exhibited. Also your kids will be delighted.
