The jewels of San Pietro are its small but mighty church as well as Castel Thurnstein
San Pietro, once referred to as Kronsbichl, is located at 596 m a.s.l. and extends from the western moat of Castel Tirolo to the Grabbach river. Already very early in time the green slope on which the area extends today, has been settled. Worth visiting in this village is above all the S. Pietro parish church offering a view on Quarazze, a city quarter of Merano: this little sacred building boasts frescoes of the Romanesque era as well as pre-Gothic paintings.
Castel Thurnstein, another worthwhile construction, rises on a rock spur in the west of the village and boasts a particularly high tower that is connected to a residence of the 16th century. This castle is by the way reachable via a bus starting from Merano.
In your family holidays we absolutely recommend you a visit to the bird care centre as well as a walk to the earth pyramids of Tirolo. Tirolo is also well-connected to various walking trails such as the famous Roggia di Lagundo or the Culture Trail. In a 30-minutes' walk you can reach the centre of Tirolo on a walking trail.
