The hamlet of San Giorgio is located at 716 m a.s.l. above the village of Scena and offers a great panoramic view on Merano and surroundings. From April to November a shuttle service runs between Scena and San Giorgio.
The eye-catcher of San Giorgio is undoubtedly its round church dating back to the 12th and 13th century, which bases on the castle chapel of Castel Scena, also called Castle of San Giorgio. The church boasts frescoes of the 14th century, which among others illustrate the martyrdom of S. George. Also the Gothic winged altar attracts the visitors' attention. By the way, only the donjon of Castel Scena, called “Ulenturm“, is left today.
Moreover San Giorgio offers possibilities for beautiful hikes, above the village for instance there is the Roggia di Scena. This walk can also be combined with a visit to the castles of Vernaun and Goyen.
