Plaus

Only a stone’s throw from Naturno, at 519 m a.s.l., there is the village of Plaus, connected to the Val Venosta cycling path and railway

The tranquil village of Plaus is located at 519 m a.s.l., close to Naturno, and has got ca. 700 inhabitants. The mild climate of Merano puts out its feelers to the municipality of Plaus, representing a calm spot of land in an idyllic position. Also an ancient fountain located under a protected maple tree in the centre of the village emphasizes the idyllic atmosphere prevailing in Plaus.

A visit to the parish church consecrated to S. Ulrico is recommendable if you spend your holidays in Plaus. With its Romanesque bell tower and its Gothic nave dating back to the 15th century as well as two Baroque paintings by Simon Ybertracher, an artist from Val Venosta, this church represents a great complete artwork.

Much more known than the church itself is the so-called “Plauser Totentanz” (Dance of Death), a piece of art of Luis Stefan Stecher from Val Venosta, painted on the cemetery wall of the church. In eleven scenes the painter deals with the topic of death. Sayings in South Tyrolean dialect complete this piece of art.

By the way, if you are looking for a souvenir to take Home, we recommend you a piece of "Speck". As Plaus is the seat of some enterprises producing bacon in the traditional way, you will be spoilt for choice.
