Since 1924 Maia Bassa has been part of the municipality of Merano, before Maia was an independent locality. Maia Bassa extends on the left riverside of the Passirio, including the territory from Winkelberg to the Adige river. Maia Bassa is characterised by calm residential districts, smaller establishments, tennis courts and camping. Its most famous and popular establishment is the Hippodrome of Maia Bassa.
In this hippodrome the first horse race has been taking place in 1935. This facility boasts a track of 2,000 metres, obstacle tracks, cross country tracks and 341 horse boxes as well as a free parking space for visitors and a playground for children.
One of the highlights in the race calendar is the Haflinger horse race on Easter Monday. Horse riding season at the hippodrome starts with this event and lasts until autumn. However, Maia Bassa is easily accessible via means of public transport.
