Pavicolo, a sun-drenched village above Lana, offers a great recreation area at the Monte San Vigilio
The sun-drenched village of Pavicolo lies at 1,110 m a.s.l. and provides a breathtaking view on the Val d'Ultimo and the Val d'Adige up to the Dolomites. The so-called Pawiglhöfe farms provide the mountain resort with an idyllic atmosphere. Inhabited by 160 people, the village is accessible via a little funicular starting from the valley entrance of the Val d'Ultimo, leading directly into the village.
A modern funicular, however, starts in Lana di Sopra and takes you to the Vigilius Mountain Resort (1,486 m) above Pavicolo, so to speak to the hiking area of Monte San Vigilio. This is where you will be spoilt for choice regarding hikes, e.g. to the protected area Schwarze Lacke, the Naturno or Lebenberg alpine pastures, to San Pancrazio or onto the Guardia Alta (2,607 m). An absolute must-see is the San Vigilio Chapel (1,790 m a.s.l.). This former cult site is idyllically located on a hill and is an absolute worthwhile excursion destination. Moreover the area of Monte San Vigilio is popular with hang- and paragliders using the hippodrome of Maia Bassa as landing site.
By the way: at the Bärenbad alpine pasture on Monte San Vigilio, in the 30s of the 20th century, several radioactive medical springs were discovered. Today this water is used for the production of the popular mineral water of Merano.
