The mountain village of Avelengo, home of the famous Haflinger horses, nestles high above the valley basin of Merano and is a fantastic place for hiking
Avelengo, considered to be the "sun terrace of Merano“, is located at the left river side of the Adige, high above the valley basin of Merano, on the sun-drenched Monzoccolo mountain (Tschoegglberg). Surrounded by shady forests and wide, lushly green alpine pastures, the village provides an impressive view on the Gruppo di Tessa mountain peaks. Boasting a total of approx. 800 inhabitants, the village mainly consists of scattered settlements and is located only 10 km from Merano. Its territory comprises the villages of Santa Caterina, Avelengo village, Avelengo di Sopra and Falzeben.
Avelengo, however, is considered the Home of the famous blond Haflinger Horses, a horse breed that is famous beyond the borders. One of these animals is also illustrated on the municipal coat of arms, together with a needle tree, referring to the location of the village between 1,200 and 2,500 m a.s.l.
Due to the fact that the village nestles in the heart of lushly green meadows and that it offers the wonderful hiking area of Merano 2000, Avelengo is a perfect destination for people who love hiking. In winter, however, the Merano 2000 transforms into a gorgeous skiing area. Also the all-year-round toboggan run Alpin-Bob Merano 2000 is a particular attraction and an absolute must-see, casting a spell over adults and kids with lightning speed.
Absolutely worth seeing is also one of the oldest farms of Avelengo, which is called "Gfrarhof“, the pond Sulfner Weiher covered by white water lilies in summer months, as well as the horse riding stable "Sulfner“.
