The Graf Volkmar Trail, an easy hiking path with some uphill and downhill sections, leads through the deciduous forest above Postal (Burgstall). The best time of the year to enjoy this area is spring or autumn, we choose this trail on a mild November day. The valley station of the Verano Cable Car near Postal with parking space and bus stop is our starting point.
After the first hundred metres towards the village centre we reach the signpost indicating "Graf Volkmar-Weg". Some stairs lead us uphill to the slope of the mountain. At 300 m a.s.l. the deciduous forest shines in bright red, yellow and golden colours - a section of the trail coincides with the "Sunnseitn-Steig" leading to Verano at 1,000 m a.s.l. Above the parish church of Postal the path continues quite flat towards north and gets wider where it meets the fitness course.
After 3.5 km we reach the end of the Graf Volkmar Trail near the Hotel Förstlerhof, located north of Postal. You can either turn back by bus or continue the hike towards Castel Gatto (Katzenstein) and Sinigo/Merano.
The path was built in 1968 by the local Association of Innkeepers and remembers the former state governor of Tyrol, Lord Volkmar. He let cultivate the area around Postal in 1330 AD and thus made the first settlements possible.
