The so-called “Pista ciclabile delle mele“ (literally: apple bicycle track) leads from the south of Merano to Bolzano

The Val d'Adige bicycle track or „Pista ciclabile delle mele“ from Merano Maia Bassa to Bolzano is a part of the Via-Claudia-Augusta bicycle track, which leads on the old Roman road from Augsburg in Germany to Ostiglia / Venice in Italy. The asphalted trail runs parallel to the river Adige and is sometimes flanked by the railway Merano - Bolzano.
Cycling across the landscape of fruit orchards, we see some South Tyrolean highlights in the valley and its surrounding mountain slopes: the beautiful villages of the Val d'Adige, many churches, castles and ruins. The southern section near Firmiano Castle offers a great round view of the Dolomites (with Mount Catinaccio and Mount Sciliar), the highlands of Appiano with the Baroque onion dome of San Paolo, Appiano Castle and Boymont Castle.
We continue our mountainbike tour towards the city of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, with its very special alpine and Mediterranean flair. Arrived at the railway station of Ponte Adige, we turn left and cycle on the main road towards Bolzano for about 200 metres until we turn right a the signpost before the Hotel Premstallerhof. After a small level crossing we can either cross a bicycle bridge to reach Appiano and Caldaro or continue straight ahead for 1 km until we reach a crossroads, where we can chose to cycle towards north into the centre of Bolzano or towards south to the Bassa Atesina region.
