Speck, sausages, cheese and local farmhouse bread - and ready is the typical snack, which is called “Marend” in South Tyrol
Ham, speck bacon, sausages of all kinds, local cheeses and tasty bread - this is a typical cold platter which is offered in taverns and farm inns in the area of Merano and surroundings. Also gherkins and pickled peppers must not be missing.
There are also different kinds of bread: tasty granary bread or the typical South Tyrolean “Vinschgerle”, made of rye, wheat and spelt flour, caraway, fenugreek and fennel. The “Vinschger Paarl” is baked in pairs already since the 13th century. But also the crispy “Schüttelbrot” bread must not be missing in the bread basket. This hard flat bread made of rye and wheat flour, water, yeast, salt and spices is very famous in South Tyrol.
A tip: bread the speck with finely chopped chives and combine this with a hot potato. A gorgeous taste! And - all these delicacies perfectly go together with a glass of red wine… Enjoy your meal!
