The Kurhaus, a masterpiece of Art Nouveau, is located in Merano, the second largest town of South Tyrol. In 1874 the historic building was inaugurated and consisted of today's western wing. In these days it was illuminated by 102 gas flames, which have been replaced in 1897 by electric lights. At the turn of the century the former reading rooms were established, and in 1911 the renovations were completed.
The architect Friedrich Ohmann (1858-1927) from Vienna designed the rotunda and the Kursaal which make a significant contribution to the beauty and elegance the building conveys. In fact the Kurhaus is one of the masterpieces of Art Nouveau buildings in the Alpine area. Kurhaus and Kursaal were constructed in 1913/14 and have been inaugurated on December 31, 1914. Artists carrying out the ceiling paintings in the Kursaal were Rudolf Jettmar (1869-1939), Horatio Gaigher (1870-1938), Alexander Rothaug (1870-1946).
Recently the entire building was renovated and is now venue for different events such as concerts, balls, banquets, presentations and press conferences. A total of 13 halls provide perfect settings for events for 10 up to 1,000 visitors. Moreover there is a restaurant with pastry shop providing treats for your palate. Also the Tourist Authority of Merano is integrated into the Kurhaus.
