Mild climate, Mediterranean vegetation and the location in the heart of a striking Alpine scenery, that's what makes the glorious city of Merano unique. From a geographic point of view, Merano (325 m a.s.l.) nestles in the basin of even three colourful valleys, which are Val Passiria, Val Venosta and Val d'Adige. Thanks to its sheltered position at the bottom of mighty mountains, the town boasts a very gentle, southern climate, favourable for the growth of a luxuriant vegetation.
Already in the 19th century the town was awarded a "climatic winter health resort" and still today such great pampering treatments as vinotherapy or apple-scented steam baths attract numerous visitors. Among the most illustrious visitors of Merano are the Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sissi), the author Franz Kafka, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke and the composer Richard Strauss, who all appreciated the favourable climate and Mediterranean feeling.
Merano also boasts a range of cultural and architectonic sites of interest, such as the Kurhaus, symbol of Merano and art nouveau masterpiece. Numerous other attractions and events are worth to be visited, ranging from the International WineFestival and Culinaria to the historic shopping arcades, the promenades and the Botanic Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Not to forget the Merano Christmas Market in Advent! This Mediterranean oasis will cast a spell over you!
