The trail to the Cima Matatz (2,179 m a.s.l. - Matatzspitze in German), delimiting the Val Passiria in the west, is not too exhausting and therefore very popular. The mountain enthrones Montaccio, a mountain village at 1,052 m a.s.l. above S. Martino in Passiria. The tour of two hours starts in Ulvas, a mountain village in the place where the Alta Via Meranese north and south high paths join. Here in the upper Val Passiria at 1,300 m a.s.l., spring and autumn might still be particularly cold.
Nevertheless this tour is to recommend in autumn, as the panoramic view in this season is just amazing. The trail stretches towards the Malga Ulvas and further on to the ridge, where you take the path n°7 and continue towards the summit. The panoramic view from the top makes you admire the Val Passiria and the entire surrounding mountain landscape.
An alternative starting point is Cresta, a village above S. Leonardo in Passiria. The route is about 3 hours longer than the above mentioned.
