The Vedetta Alta at S. Valburga is only a few metres higher than the Guardia Alta at the entrance of the Val d’Ultimo

The Val d'Ultimo valley has two mountains that in German language are called "Hochwart", that is to say the Guardia Alta at San Pancrazio (2,608 m a.s.l. - Ultner Hochwart in German) and the Vedetta Alta, only a few metres higher (2,627 m a.s.l.). The trail starts at the Monzoccolo Lake at S. Valburga and takes you to the summit in about 5 hours.
The trail no. 20 is rather steep and takes you to the Malga Seegruben (1,917 m a.s.l.), which in summer months is ideal for a stop. This is where butter and cheese are still home-made. Slightly higher, there is the Lago Guardia Alta. The actually large lake sometimes evaporates in midsummer to the extent that only a small puddle remains.
Once you have reached the top you are rewarded with a fabulous panoramic view, ranging up to the Trentino with the Val di Sole and the Brenta Dolomites. What is also amazing is the view on the mountains of the Val di Non. By the way: if you prefer more comfortable walks, we recommend you the walk from Malga Seegruben to Malga Pfandler (1,838 m a.s.l.).
