At the Passo Palade near the pilgrimage site San Felice, where South Tyrol and the Trentino meet, there is a little lake in the forest. This lake of 3.84 hectares already appears in the historic Atlas Tyrolensis of the 18th century. Then without name, it was later named Lago di Tret (Felixer Weiher in German) in the course of time, when the inhabitants of the Italian village of Tret purchased grounds in its environs.
Lake Tret can be reached on different hiking trails. In San Felice, the hiking trail n° 9 starts, leading across wonderful forests and larch meadows up to the lake. Especially in high summer, visitors enjoy a jump into the fresh waters of the lake. This is when even at 1,604 m a.s.l. the water temperature reaches up to 25 degrees C. Hungry? At the lakeside, at the tavern Waldruhe, you can taste the delicious Kaiserschmarrn, a local delicacy. If you would like to continue your walk, you can choose the Seerundweg (trail round the lake), the San Felice mountain pasture (Felixer Alm) and Mount Macaion (Gantkofel).
The 3-4 m deep lake, with its little island, is under natural protection. The biotope is rich in water plants, that are also controlled 1-2 times a year. Fish such as tench as well as dragonflies, amphibians, butterflies and bumble bees live in and round the lake. For fishing you need a day ticket and the Italian fishing license.
