Museum of Women

In the Merano Women’s Museum you can admire feminine ideals, the roles of women and the world’s most marvellous dresses

The history of women over the past 200 years is documented in this somewhat different museum with many dresses and everyday objects, such as Biedermeier sewing utensils or hoovers from the 1950s. A unique collection in the whole of Europe, which consists of the permanent exhibition ‘Ideals of beauty, typical female roles and women & work ’ and is wonderfully complemented by constantly changing special exhibitions and readings. There is even a library on the subject with original literature on fashion, women's studies and costume studies.

You can take a closer look at the history of our great-grandmothers, grandmothers and mothers and perhaps even see certain developmental processes more clearly. The association that runs the museum has set itself the task of ‘women's research’, among other things. The museum is housed on the top two floors of the former convent of the Poor Clares on the Piazza del Grano in Merano, built in 1309.
