The rise of violence - how is it to be understand?

Hamlet probably understood that his time was out of control. But what then of our times, in which everything is on fire and in which the scale and complexity of problems seem to be getting out of hand? Does today's increasing violence come from a feeling of increasing powerlessness and a resulting need to feel powerful?
